West Suburban Special Recreation Association (WSSRA)
The River Forest Park District joined West Suburban Special Recreation Association in 1976. River Forest residents of any age with an impairment or disability can enjoy special recreation activities. Participants in WSSRA programs include children who receive special education services, persons with vision or hearing impairments, children and adults with physical disabilities, developmental delay and mental health concerns.
WSSRA programs are designed and supervised by staff with an educational background in disabilities. These Recreation Specialists help participants be successful by adapting activities, providing close supervision, creating behavior plans, celebrating accomplishments, and being knowledgeable about programming content. West Suburban Special Recreation Association offers 50 to 60 program options each season. Adult programs offered weekdays and evenings. After School and Saturday activities are offered for children and teens. The Association provides one-to-one assistance when needed and there is a minimum participant to staff ratio of 4:1 at our athletic, excursion, and social programs.
West Suburban support staff and volunteers are interviewed, screened and trained by the Staff Coordinators. They are carefully matched to a program that fits their availability and interest area.
